OXON SENIOR LEAGUE – CLARENDON CUP
BICESTER HALLIONS RES 2 V CROPREDY DEVELOPMENT 6
Would this be the day when the reserves finally get that elusive victory?
With Cropredy providing the opposition and following last week’s battering it looked unlikely, however a determined looking team took up the challenge despite the nonappearance of a number of players.
The game kick off with the rain swirling around the ground, although to be fair the pitch was in perfect condition.
As expected it was Cropredy who started on the front foot with striker Alfie Jarvis missing a number of clear cut chances before he finally netted in the 10th minute despite looking suspiciously offside.
Then in the 15th minute a Toby Baughan effort was blocked on the goal line from a Hallions counter attack.
This was followed by keeper Christopher Brown pulling off a full length save to foil Dan Dyer. Both Jarvis and Balfour continued to waste opportunities for the visitors, although only a great save by Hallions keeper Nick Smith kept out a Corey Phillips effort in the 25th minute.
However they were made to pay in the 30th minute when a handball in the visitor’s penalty area saw Dan Dyer calmly slot home from the resulting penalty.
Cropredy were clearly rattled and seemed to lose their composure, resulting some rather tasty tackles as Hallions increased the pressure.
In the 40th minute the Cropredy defence faltered and the alert teenager Sam Donaldson cleverly beat keeper Brown to give the Hallions the lead.
On the stroke of half time another great save from Mouse Smith stopped a certain equaliser from a Balfour effort.
HALF TIME 2 – 1
Cropredy started the second half determined to level the scores with a series of attacks, although unlike the previous week the Hallions were showing a greater desire and commitment to the cause.
However the team suffered a major setback in the 55th minute with the loss of midfielder Dan Dyer.
Minutes later and Cropredy levelled with Alex Morrish dancing through the home defence to score.
In the 70th minute Jarvis netted following a slip in the home defence to give Cropredy the lead.
Back came the Hallions with Jason Hallatt firing a 30 yard screamer inches over the crossbar.
However minutes later Leo Beales added to the visitor’s advantage with a fine individual goal.
Hallions had now run out of steam, although the team were still giving their all, but a somewhat dubious goal from substitute Alex Palmer sealed the Hallions fate.
With the same player adding a second goal to give Cropredy a 6-2 victory and progress into the next round.
